MASSENA -- Massena Nursery School may re-open, if enough parents express interest in enrolling their children.

“We were offered another spot in a building in the village … I don’t want to say where the building is yet because it hasn’t gone through their board of directors as far as getting 100 percent approved,” said Nursery School Director Mollie LaGrow. “I have high hopes I’ll be able to get this going again.”

She said the program won’t be able to go anywhere until she knows how many children would participate.

“I need about 35 kids enrolled to be able to comfortable working our budget … I’m at about 25 students right now,” LaGrow said Tuesday afternoon. “Once we hit the 35 number, it will be safe.”

The school, which opened in 1959, closed in August due to declining enrollment.

LaGrow said what could be their new home is asking for less money than their former hosts, New Testament Church.

“We were not able to fulfill our financial obligations to them … our enrollment was too low to maintain fin obligation there,” LaGrow said.

She said any parents who want to enroll their child should contact her by the end of the month.

“I’m asking anyone to send an email to massenanurseryschool@gmail.com … I need parents’ contact info, child’s name and birthdate and how many days per week they want to enroll their child,” LaGrow said.

All children must be 3 or 4 years old by December and toilet-trained, according to a post on the nursery school’s Facebook page.

Classes run 9 to 11:30 a.m. with options for Monday, Wednesday and Friday, Tuesday and Thursday or Monday through Friday.

Cost is $115 per month for two days per week, $150 for three days and $187 for five days.

“Massena Nursery School originally opened in 1959 and I feel like we’ve been a cornerstone in the community since then,” LaGrow said. With Massena in the state it’s in, it would be nice to see good news, that we can reopen and the Massena community is supporting us.”
