POTSDAM -- U.S. Navy Cryptologist Technician First Class (CT1) Stephen Zakarauskas, a Massena native based at the Navy’s Potsdam recruiting office, has been named the Navy Recruiting Region East Recruiter of the Year.
Zakarauskas joined the Navy at 18, and has been serving now for seven years.
He has visited 37 countries including India, Australia, Thailand, Singapore and Bahrain. He has worked with U.S. coalition partners to protect offshore oil terminals in the Arabian Gulf and participated in counter-piracy operations.
Now back in the North Country, recruiting out of the Potsdam office, Zakarauskas has volunteered to help coach the Massena Central wrestling team as well as a local youth division.
For his exemplary performance – both professional and personal – Zakarauskas has been named the Navy Recruiting Region East Recruiter of the Year, an honor representative of his work to recruit the best men and women for the Navy and hid desire to give back to his community.
