Massena Memorial Hospital gynecologist receives board certification

MASSENA -- Massena Memorial Hospital Dr. Emmanuel Nwogu, D.O., recently received his board certification in Obstetrics/Gynecology.

He is now considered an expert in OB/GYN by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) and the American College of Osteopathic Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOOG). Dr. Nwogu was designated a senior fellow by ACOOG upon successfully completing his board exams.

The American Osteopathic Association lists Dr. Nwogu as the only OB/GYN Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine in St. Lawrence County. To become board certified, a physician must complete a written and oral examination as specified by strict ACOOG standards. Dr. Nwogu completed his written examination in 2016, but recently completed his oral examinations in Chicago earlier this year.

Dr. Nwogu explained the oral exam was conducted in two parts. During the first round OB/GYN members of ACOOG administering the oral exam asked him to provide detailed information on obstetrics, gynecology, infertility, reproductive endocrinology, gynecologic endocrinology, and urogynecology. The second and final segment required Dr. Nwogu to properly identify up to 50 slides of medical situations from microscopic slides to surgical images to natural deliveries.

Dr. Nwogu considered following his father’s advice to become a general surgeon when he pursued his medical degree at Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine. After hearing the story of the complications his mother experienced when she was pregnant with him, Dr. Nwogu felt drawn to become an OB/GYN.

He earned his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine with a specialty of OB/GYN from Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2008. A Doctor of Osteopathic medicine focuses on a holistic approach of treating the entire patient’s mind, body and spirit, rather than just the symptoms a person is experiencing. He completed five years of residency training in obstetrics/gynecology from St. John’s Episcopal Hospital in Far Rockaway, NY; Trinitas Regional Medical Center in Elizabeth, NJ; and South Nassau Community Hospital in Oceanside, NY. Dr. Nwogu is a member of the ACOG, ACOOG and American Osteopathic Association (AOA).

Dr. Nwogu is accepting new patients at the North Country Women’s Health Center. Call 315-769-4638 to set up an appointment today.
