MASSENA — Massena Memorial Hospital finished 2016 with a $1.35 million net gain, 7.6 percent ahead of what they expected at the beginning of the year.

Despite the monetary gain, overall admissions finished below budget and below last year’s numbers.

For the year, they discharged 2,229 inpatients, 10.7 percent below budget and 5.2 percent below last year. Total outpatient registrations clocked at 118,545, 2.2 below budget and 2 percent below last year.

“Financially, a lot of work went on this last year. A lot of people contributed to it. I think we’re starting to get some traction on Massena residents coming to Massena Memorial Hospital,” MMH CEO Bob Wolleben said at Monday’s Board of Managers meeting. “We paid attention to our cash, so we had another year reversing some trends.”

The hospital finished 2016 with more people coming to the emergency room - 16,124, more than the 15,935 people in 2015.

Their 26 days of cash onhand at the end of 2016 dropped below last year’s 46, also below Wolleben’s goal of 35. He said this is due to Medicare clawbacks and a low-volume adjustment payment of $1.3 million which they should have received in December but didn’t get until the next year.

MMH is being charged more than a million dollars by their Medicare contractor for money the contractor says the government overpaid years ago. MMH has already spent the money, and is now stuck paying six monthly payments of $285,000. They have made three and have three more to go, Wolleben said.
