Massena mayor’s race highlights local elections on Tuesday; contests also in Canton, Gouverneur

The race for the mayor’s office in Massena will be settled between the incumbent and the police chief and voters will decide a three-way race for two trustees seats in the villages of Canton and Gouverneur Nov. 4.

Also on the ballot is a four-way contest for two trustee seats in the village. Meanwhile, in the Town of Gouverneur, there are two people running to finish out a three-year unexpired Town Council term.

In the Village of Canton, Republican Nick Kocher and Democrats Elizabeth Larrabee and Dwight Stevenson will vie for two village trustee seats. They are currently held by Brooke Rouse and Elizabeth Larrabee.

In the Town of Canton, incumbent Justice Christopher Curley is up for re-election. He is not seeking a new term, and the only name on the ballot for the spot is Democrat Jim Monroe.

The Village of Gouverneur also has two trustee seats up for grabs. Republican Diane Cotter and incumbent Democrat Charles Newvine are running for them, along with Nelson Lawrence, an incumbent who will appear on both the Democrat and GOP lines.

Voters in the Town of Gouverneur will be filling a one-year and a three-year unexpired term on the Town Council. Jaimee McQuade is running on the Democrat and GOP lines for the one-year slot. Conservative Steven Jackson and Timothy Matice, who is running as a Democrat and Republican, will vie for the three-year seat.

Voters in the Village of Massena will pick a new mayor, two trustees and a justice. Incumbent Mayor James Hidy is running as a Republican and Timmy Currier will represent the Democrats. Incumbent trustees Tim Ahlfeld, a Democrat and Patricia Wilson, a Republican are seeking re-election. Also contending for the positions are Democrat Matt Lebire and Republican R. Shawn Gray. Incumbent Democrat Justice Eric Gustafson is running for re-election with no opposition on the ballot.

Massena's town voters will elect a new justice. Democrat incumbent Gerald Sharlow is running unopposed for a new term.

Voters in Potsdam will select a new town justice. Democrat incumbent Samuel Charleson is running unopposed.

Here is a list of other local offices up for election in St. Lawrence County, along with their candidates that will appear on the ballot:

• Brasher - Councilman, three-year unexpired term, Democrat Francis Burns is running unopposed.

• Colton - Justice, Republican incumbent Dale Robar is running unopposed.

• DeKalb - Highway Superintendent, 1-year unexpired term, Republican Alan Garrand and Democrat Jody Hamilton; Councilman, 1-year unexpired term, Democrat Rae Ann Davis is unopposed; Justice, Democrat incumbent Howard Putney is unopposed.

• Fine - Justice, Republican Julie LaTray is unopposed.

• Hermon - Town Clerk, 1-year unexpired term, Republican Karen Wayering is unopposed; Councilman, 3-year unexpired term, Republican Kathleen Carpenter is unopposed; Highway Superintendent, 1-year unexpired term, Democrat Robert Reed and Republican Brian Brunet.

• Heuvelton (village) - Two full-term trustee seats, one 1-year unexpired trustee term, Republican incumbents Neil Parish and Jack Wood, Democrat Robert Reed and Republican William Knowlton.

• Hopkinton - Justice, Republican incumbent David Beekman is unopposed.

• North Lawrence - Justice, Republican Missie Hastings LaVigne is unopposed.

• Parishville - Supervisor, three-year unexpired term, Democrat Cassie Hayes and Republican Rodney Votra; Councilman, 1-year unexpired term, Republican Brian Gray and Democrat Melvin Sweeney.

• Rensselaer Falls (village) - Two trustee seats, Democrats Charles Fifield and Connie McAllister.

• Rossie - Supervisor, 1-year unexpired term, Republican Harry Turnbull is unopposed.

• Stockholm - Town Clerk, 1-year unexpired term, Democrat Heather Kish is unopposed.

• Waddington - Councilman, 1-year unexpired term, Democrat Shirley Robinson is unopposed.
