MASSENA -- Mayor Tim Currier made a proclamation at Tuesday’s village board meeting that makes Aug. 23 Harold “Hal” Smith Day in Massena.
Smith was born in Michigan, raised in Massena on Brighton Street and graduated from Massena High School in the 1930s. His acting credits include the voice of Owl in “Winnie The Pooh” and Tex in “The Flintstones.” He died in 1994.
“Massena remains very proud of his achievements,” Currier read from the proclamation.
John Michaud, who describes himself as Smith’s official biographer and wrote a book about him, is planning an event to celebrate the actor’s life on Aug. 23, near what would have been his 100th birthday. It will include a video of some of what Michaud feels are Smith’s best works and a birthday cake. It will be at the Massena Public Library from 4 to 7 p.m.
Michaud never met Smith in person, but talked to him many times over the phone. He said Smith would always send autographed photos for anyone who wanted them.
“It’s a positive thing for Massena and something I’ve been hoping to do for a long time,” Michaud said. “I appreciate you doing this for Hal. It means a lot to me.”
