BEEKMANTOWN -- A Massena man was killed and a Hopkinton man was hospitalized following a helicopter crash Tuesday afternoon in a field adjacent to Burke Road, according to state police.

A report of a helicopter crash came in around 4:16 p.m. and local EMS, fire departments, the Clinton County Sheriff’s Office, Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) and State Police responded. Upon arrival, a helicopter was observed to be burning while partially suspended from the power lines.

The four occupants were transported to the University of Vermont Health Network at Champlain Valley Physician's Hospital where one of the pilots, Robert T. Hoban Jr., 56, Shamang, New Jersey, and a passenger, Jeremy P. Kearns, 30, Massena, were pronounced deceased, troopers said.

Two additional occupants, Benjamin L. McAllister, 30, Hopkinton, and Scott E. Fabia, 34, Hyde Park, were kept at the hospital for further observation, officers said.

An investigation revealed the helicopter, a 1981 Aerospatiale, model AS355F2, owned by Catalyst Aviation LLC, was contracted by Northline Utilities for the New York Power Authority, to work on the power lines, police said.

Autopsies have been scheduled for Hoban today and Kearns on Nov. 1.

The National Transportation Safety Board and Federal Aviation Administration are assisting in the investigation, troopers said.
