MASSENA -- A Massena man is jailed for allegedly putting an infant’s life in jeopardy while making methamphetamine.

Charles R. Murdie, 34, of 259 County Rte. 43 is charged with felony unlawful manufacture of methamphetamine and misdemeanor second-degree reckless endangerment.

Village Police Sgt. Mark Englert said in a statement that he was patrolling the Maple Street trailer park early Sunday morning in response to a complaint that Murdie and another person were making meth. He also noted that Murdie was wanted on three arrest warrants.

Englert said he spotted Murdie near the trailer park entrance, and he placed something underneath a trailer after seeing the patrol car. Englert looked and found that it was a two or three-liter plastic bottle with pseudophedrine tablets and lithium strips in a chemical solution, which he describes in court documents as a “highly unstable and volatile mixture.” He said the bottle, which had been placed next to the trailer’s propane tank, was hot to the touch, emanated a chemical smell and was a risk of fire or explosion.

Englert knocked on the door and found Murdie. He informed the occupants that they were in danger and they went to a friend’s house while the Massena Fire Department disposed of the mixture.

Murdie was arraigned by Massena Village Justice Eric Gustafson and remanded to the St. Lawrence County Correctional Facility in lieu of $15,000 bail or $30,000 bond.
