MASSENA -- A Massena man is jailed on six charges for allegedly beating up his girlfriend and holding a knife to her throat.

Donavan L. Smith, 19, of 41 Martin St. is charged with third-degree assault, second-degree menacing, fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon, criminal obstruction of breathing, unlawful imprisonment and second-degree harassment, police said.

Court documents state that Smith was arguing with his girlfriend, Brittany Courters, and he assaulted her while the two walked down Center Street.

In a sworn statement to police, Smith admitted slapping Courters and holding a knife to her throat.

Courters told police that he also struck her in the stomach, back and face. The knife also left what was described in court documents as “a superficial cut.”

Smith was arraigned by Massena Town Justice Gerald Sharlow and remanded to the St. Lawrence County Correctional Facility, Canton, in lieu of $2,500 bail.
