Massena man charged with murder for roommate's October death

CANTON -- A St. Lawrence County grand jury on Thursday handed up an indictment charging a Massena man with his roommate's death.

Bjork is accused of killing his roommate Demar Buckner, 50, via blunt force trauma on the night of Oct. 27. Massena Police Chief Adam Love said Bjork used his bare hands to kill Buckner.

He had been held at the St. Lawrence County Correctional Facility, Canton, since the night of the killing. Police at the time said Bjork had alcohol on his breath, which violated his probation.

Bjork is on probation for an August case where he was charged with fourth-degree criminal mischief, second-degree harassment and second-degree unlawful imprisonment. He is also a level two registered sex offender, having been convicted of second-degree sexual abuse in March 2005.

Judge Derek Champagne remanded him to the county jail in lieu of $100,000 bail or $200,000 bond. Assistant District Attorney Keith Massey argued that Bjork "has shown even under supervision he cannot control his violent impulses" and asked for $200,000 bail. Public Defender Stephen Ballan argued that Bjork is a lifelong St. Lawrence County resident with familial ties to the area, which doesn't make him a flight risk. He asked for "reasonable bail."
