MASSENA -- Village police charged a Massena man with misdemeanor drug possession after accusing him of having oxycodone mailed to him from an ex-paramour in North Carolina.
Steven J. Hunt, 43, of 38 Middlebury Ave. was charged Wednesday with one count of seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.
Police said they charged him at 9:09 p.m. that day following a traffic stop in the Kinney Drugs parking lot on Main Street.
Hunt gave a statement to police and said he has been suffering from lower back pain for over-the-counter pain medicine wasn't working.
He said his ex-girlfriend, Crystal Spears of North Carolina, began mailing him the pills within the last couple of months. He said she has a prescription to treat a chronic injury sustained in a car accident.
Village police were assisted in their investigation by the U.S. Postal Service Inspector's Office.
Hunt was released with appearance tickets for Massena court on Dec. 9, police said.
