MASSENA -- A Massena man is facing impaired driving and theft charges for allegedly trying to skip out on a cab fare and crashing his truck during his attempted escape.
Village police said 58-year-old Floyd E. LaValley of 107 South Grasse Road is charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated, unlawful possession of marijuana, theft of services and unsafe backing.
LaValley took a taxi from Plum Brook Road in Norfolk to the Massena VFW at 101 West Hatfield St. on Monday night, according to court documents. He gave the driver $3 of the $18 fare and said he had to get the remainder from his vehicle, court documents state. He then tried to drive away but put the truck in reverse instead of drive and crashed into a snowbank, according to court documents.
After police arrived, they gave LaValley a chance to pay the remaining $15 but he told them he didn’t have any money, court documents state.
He was also found to be in possession of a leafy green substance that tested positive for marijuana and a marijuana smoking device, according to court documents.
LaValley was arraigned by Massena Village Justice Eric Gustafson and released under probationary supervision pending further court action.
