MASSENA -- A Massena man is facing several counts after allegedly holding a knife to a 14-year-old’s throat, and a second Massena resident is jailed after breaking into the alleged knife-holder’s apartment following the incident. A third person was charged with possessing items allegedly stolen from the apartment.
Police accuse James W. Pratt, 38, of 48 East Hatfield St., Apt. 4 of holding a knife to the teenager’s throat and not letting the person leave. Pratt was charged at 8:27 p.m. Saturday with second-degree menacing, unlawful imprisonment, second-degree harassment and child endangerment, all misdemeanors, police said.
Just four hours later at 12:34 a.m. Sunday, police say they charged Jamie S. Montoya, 18, of 323 State Route 37C after he allegedly broke into Pratt’s apartment after Pratt was picked up on charges stemming from the alleged knife incident.
Montoya is accused of breaking open a safe and stealing prescription medications, police said. He is charged with second-degree burglary, felony, and misdemeanor counts of fourth-degree criminal mischief and petit larceny, police said.
Schuyler G. Mitchell, 19, of 48 East Hatfield Street is charged with possessing items that Montoya allegedly stole from Pratt's apartment, police said. He was also found to be growing marijuana, police said. Mitchell is charged with fifth-degree criminal possession of stolen property and unlawful growing of cannabis, misdemeanor, and unlawful possession of marijuana, a violation, police said.
Pratt was arraigned by Massena Justice Eric Gustafson and released after posting $5,000 bail, police said.
Montoya was arraigned in front of Gustafson and remanded to the St. Lawrence County jail, Canton, in lieu of $5,000 bail, police said.
