MASSENA -- A 30-year-old village resident is jailed on two felonies for allegedly breaking into his neighbor's home and stealing about $11,600 cash from her in the early morning hours of Oct. 1.
Aaron M. Thompson of 73 Ames St. is charged with third-degree grand larceny and second-degree burglary, both felonies, and criminal trespass, a misdemeanor.
According to a statement from Thompson's neighbor, Elizabeth Hurd, she left him with a key to check on her business and residence, Lottie's Beauty Salon, at 75 Ames St.
She said she was missing boxes of cash containing about $2,400, about $320 in rolled quarters and a lockbox containing about $9,000. Hurd also told police she noticed a baggie containing cancer medication was missing.
Thompson admitted to police in a statement that he was involved with the alleged theft. He claimed that he and another man went into the building, but the accomplice did the actual theft while he acted as a lookout.
When asked if the there are charges pending against the alleged accomplice or if police expect to arrest him, Lt. Mark LaBrake said “the investigation is continuing.”
Thompson was charged at 12:10 p.m. Tuesday on Ames Street.
He was arraigned in Massena court by Justice Eric Gustafson and remanded to the St. Lawrence County Correctional Facility, Canton in lieu of $7,500 bail or $15,000 bond.
He has a preliminary hearing scheduled for Friday at 8 a.m.
