MASSENA -- The village is weighing a new system that would give people more time to come up with money for sidewalk repairs.
Under the current system, people get about 10 months between notice that work is needed and when final payment is due. Under the proposal, they would get closer to 17.
When sidewalks need maintenance, the village notifies the property owner. They have the option of hiring the Department of Public Works or going with an contractor.
“This will give people with fixed income or of modest means time to prepare,” Mayor Tim Currier said. “It will create a whole lot of convenience for people we’re trying to help.”
Presently, property owners get notices around May and have until March to pay. Under the proposed system, they would get notices in November.
