MASSENA -- The Massena Independent Living Center has started a new program designed to give disabled individuals more control over their personal assistance needs.
The “Consumer Directed Personal Assistance Services” will allow individuals determine which services they receive, instead of simply receiving services.
The program will allow the patient to hire the person of his choice, train them and supervise them on a daily basis. Patients can also choose their own schedule.
Patients may direct personal assistants in tasks such as:
• Bathing and toileting
• Personal errands
• Getting in and out of bed or wheelchair
• Cleaning
• Eating and drinking
• Some skilled nursing care
In order to be eligible for the program an individual must:
• Be eligible for Medicaid
• Be approved for personal assistance by the Department of Social Services
• Be able to understand decisions about their medical care and implement them.
