MASSENA -- The Massena Historical Society will trim some of their excess inventory as they finalize their move from the Massena Museum, East Orvis Street, to the new Celine G. Philibert Cultural Center and Museum on Main Street.
On Wednesday, the Town Council voted to loan some of the deaccessioned items to the St. Lawrence Power and Equipment Museum in Madrid and other “appropriate town museums,” according to the meeting agenda. Vintage copies of the Massena High School Tattler yearbook will be donated to the school and the remainder of the items will be put up for bids, the board decided.
Money raised at the auction will go back to the museum, Town Supervisor Joe Gray said.
“Years ago, we accepted anything to build the town’s inventory. Now it’s time to get rid of it,” Gray said.
“Some of it is not relevant to the Town of Massena,” Councilman Samuel Carbone said.
“There’s a hundred-and-some pages of items,” Gray said. “A lot of these are old books.”
“There’s six or eight typewriters. We can’t have six or eight typewriters,” Carbone said.
Gray said some of the list includes military uniforms worn by veterans from other towns but donated to the MHS.
“They will be sent back to their respective town,” he said.
Carbone said the items relevant to Massena that aren’t redundant would still be part of the historical society’s collection.
“That board treasures every relevant item,” Carbone said.
