Massena falls to -25 degrees, beats record low for Dec. 17

MASSENA – For those having issues getting their vehicles started or with pipes freezing in their homes, there is a good reason for it as temperatures reached a record low overnight, according to Weather Underground.

According to Weather Underground, temperatures reached 25 below zero at Massena’s airport last night and beat the previous record of 17 below in 1951.

The average temperature for Dec. 17 is 21 degrees and the record high occurred in the year 2000 with a temperature of 54 degrees, Weather Underground says.

The National Weather Service says temperatures will climb to around 16 degrees today with snow likely between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. with a total accumulation of less than one inch.

There is a 40 percent chance of snow shows tonight, mainly before 11 p.m. with lows reaching around 5 degrees, the service says.

Temperatures should begin to rise slowly throughout the week with chances of snow or rain each day through the weekend, the service says.

According to the service the forecast through the weekend is as follows:

Tonight A 40 percent chance of snow showers, mainly before 11pm. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 5. Northeast wind around 5 mph becoming calm in the evening. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible.

Wednesday A slight chance of snow showers between 2pm and 4pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 22. Calm wind becoming southwest 5 to 7 mph in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 20%.

Wednesday Night A chance of snow showers between 1am and 3am. Cloudy, with a low around 17. Southwest wind 6 to 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible.

Thursday A chance of snow showers before 3pm, then a chance of rain and snow showers. Cloudy, with a high near 37. Southwest wind 9 to 14 mph, with gusts as high as 24 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible.

Thursday Night A chance of rain and snow showers before 7pm, then a chance of snow showers. Cloudy, with a low around 24. Southwest wind around 6 mph becoming calm after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible.

Friday Snow showers likely before 1pm, then rain and snow showers likely. Cloudy, with a high near 34. Calm wind becoming southwest around 6 mph in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 60%.
