Massena experiences record-setting month of cold weather, below zero temps felt on 22 of 28 days

MASSENA -- Those that thought February felt a little colder than usual were right.

Massena experienced a record-setting month of cold weather as the average temperature was only three degrees which broke the previous record of 6 degrees in 1993, according to The Weather Underground.

The temperatures were recorded at Richards Field, the official weather-recording station for the northern portion of St. Lawrence County.

Below zero weather was felt on 22 of 28 days in the month, according to Accuweather.com.

The high temperature for the month reportedly never hit 32 degrees. The high was 29 degrees on Feb. 4. The coldest temperature for the month was -24 and happened on Feb. 6 and Feb. 23.

A record low was reported on Feb. 21 as lows hit -21 being the previous record of -15 set in 2004, according to Weather Underground.

The average February temperature just one year ago was ten degrees warmer at 15 degrees.

There will be a at least a few frigid nights remaining before spring.

The National Weather Service (NWS) predicts lows around five on Wednesday night and -6 on Thursday evening before warming up to 10 to 12 degrees for overnight weekend temps.

The NWS 10-day forecast shows highs in the 20s and 30s during the day and lows in around 10 to 15 most nights.
