Massena Democrats nominate slate of candidates for November election

MASSENA -- At a recent caucus, the Massena Democratic Party nominated their candidates for the November general election.

They have given the nod to Steve O’Shaughnessy for town supervisor, incumbents Albert Nicola and Samuel Carbone for town council and incumbent Joseph Brown for town justice.

O’Shaughnessy, who is currently a town councilman, is challenging two-term Supervisor Joseph Gray, a Republican.

“I have enjoyed serving the people of the Town of Massena as Town Councilman and in the past, on the Town Planning Board. Moving forward, I believe we can improve the way we do business. I am frustrated by the lack of direction that we take and I believe that we need to develop a clear, specific plan that takes us from our status quo to a defined goal where we believe Massena should be. Many of our residents talk about Massena in that way, a town where many people want to visit. We have miles of trails for biking and walking that interconnect great access to waterways for boating and fishing, tourism sites such as nature centers, visitor centers, library and museum and cultural centers. There is lots of talk about it, but there is no clear concise method to get there. We need that plan,” O’Shaughnessy said in a prepared statement from the Massena Democrats.

Nicola has served in town and village government for 27 years, a news release from the Massena Democrats says. He is a retired Massena Central teacher and sports coach.

“I’ve seen a lot in my years in public life and I believe that I know what works and what doesn’t,” Nicola said in a prepared statement.

Carbone, who is just finishing his first term as town councilman, will also appear in the Working Families ballot line.

“Town government isn't a one person show, It takes an entire board of prepared individuals to work together, we each have great attributes to compliment each other,” the candidate said in a prepared statement. “In the years to come I would like to see a more defined set of goals and a plan to accomplish these goals in a timely manner. We need to make our town more attractive to visitors and investors. We need to collaborate with all levels of government to advance our area.”

In March, Brown was appointed to fill out an unexpired town justice term and he will run for a new four-year seat.

He recently retired after 23 years with the Massena Police Department and is now director of the David Sullivan St. Lawrence County Police Academy at SUNY Canton.

“I was able to attend the mandatory justice training this spring and since being on the court I find the job to challenging but interesting. With all of the issues that we have in Massena, it takes the extra effort to find solutions for everyone’s issues and to be fair and just. I’m always learning and I look forward to serving the people of Massena for the next four years,” Brown said in prepared remarks.
