MASSENA -- The Town Council is starting the process to enact a landing fee schedule as Massena International Airport.
Town Supervisor Joseph Gray said most airports have them and it would not be a deterrent to aircraft.
“When planes land in Massena for whatever reason, the pilots say ‘what’s your landing fee?’” Gray said. “We’re the only airport we can find around here that doesn’t charge a landing fee … If it’s common practice and won’t discourage planes from landing here and will generate some revenue, why aren’t we doing it?”
He said if the idea becomes law, it would be based on weight. Planes less than 6,000 pounds would be exempt.
“They range from $18 to maybe a few hundred for a huge plane … Cape Air now pays $50 fee for each landing,” Gray said.
He said the fee would be waived if a fuel purchase was involved with the landing.
The proposal would have to go through a public hearing before the board can take action.
