MASSENA -- The Massena Chamber of Commerce director is in talks with the village police department to acquire their impounded bikes and start bike tours.
Mayor Tim Currier at Tuesday’s village board meeting told chamber director Nathan Lashomb that it shouldn’t be a problem since their bike auction only brings in $100 or $200 each year.
“Looking at what this could do for the community, it’s a better way to spend our money,” Currier said. “We will consult with the village attorney.”
“We still have a lot of planning to do, but it linches with getting the bikes,” Lashomb said, adding that he hopes to get the bikes at little to no cost, if possible.
He suggested the bike trails could follow the Seaway Trail go through town with sponsoring businesses among the stops.
Lashomb said they could store them in the chamber offices or in the basement of the empty synagogue next door to protect them from winter weather.
The village trustees seemed to like the notion.
“I think it’s a great idea,” Trustee Tim Ahlfeld said.
“Wonderful idea,” Trustee Albert Deshaies said.
