MASSENA -- Massena Central School has narrowed its superintendent search to two candidates.

Potsdam Central School Superintendent Patrick Brady and Hadley-Luzerne School Superintendent Paul Berry are the finalists.

Hadley-Luzerne is located near Glens Falls.

Massena Central School Board of Education President John Boyce said he was very pleased with the pool of candidates, but Brady and Berry rose above the rest during the most recent interviews held by school board.

“We had intended to narrow it down from six to three candidates, but ended up narrowing it from five to two,” he said.

Brady has served as Potsdam’s superintendent since 2005. He holds a bachelor's degree in history and master of science degree in secondary social studies education from SUNY Potsdam. He also earned a master's in educational administration from St. Lawrence University. Brady taught high school social studies at Potsdam Central School for 12 years and was an advisor to several extracurricular organizations, according to the Potsdam school district’s website.

Brady was a summer school teacher for the Massena Central School District before becoming assistant principal at Massena High School from 2000 to 2002 and principal at J. William Leary Junior High in Massena from 2002 to 2005.

Brady was Potsdam town supervisor from 1996 to 2003 and served 11 years total on the Potsdam Town Council.

Paul Berry has been superintendent at Hadley-Luzerne school since 2012 and has spent over twenty years working in K-12 education, according to the district’s website.

Berry also worked as Galway Central School’s director of curriculum and instruction and as Galway’s middle school principal for eight years.

Berry holds undergraduate and graduate degrees from SUNY Plattsburgh. In addition, he completed his PhD at the University of Albany, the website says.

The board hopes to replace Interim Superintendent of Schools William Flynn, who was hired earlier this year as a temporary replacement for another interim superintendent, William Crist.

Finalist interviews will be conducted on Jan. 12, 13 and 14.

Teachers, administrators, support staff, students, and the community will all provide input to the board about the finalists. To aid in the process the school board will solicit feedback from the community on the final three superintendent candidates.

Five different committees have been established to interview the two finalists.
