MASSENA — The Board of Education’s study of the district’s buildings, which could recommend building closures, is underway.

The ad hoc committee, which includes school officials and community members, and consultants held their first meeting Wednesday evening.

Superintendent Patrick Brady at Thursday’s school board meeting said their discussion the night prior largely revolved around enrollment projections.

“From 2011-12 to this previous year, our K through 12 enrollment dropped 143 students, about 5.3 percent,” he told the board, adding that projections based on live birth rates have the district losing another 194, or 7.5 percent, by 2023-24.

“Even with the drop there, we still … have not declined at he same rate as other regional schools,” he said. “There’s been a bit of a steady decline and that’s expected to continue over time.”

The committee’s next meeting will be Nov. 1 at Jefferson Elementary at 5:30 p.m. The public may attend. The committee will arrive 45 minutes early for a facility tour.
