MASSENA -- A new principal will be at the helm of J.W. Leary Junior High for the new school year.

Alan Oliver will start the job Sept. 1, according to Superintendent of Schools Pat Brady. Oliver is currently Madison Elementary principal.

“At this point it’s a temporary hire until the Board of Education meets Aug. 18,” Brady said, and added he anticipates the school trustees will approve Oliver for the permanent post.

Oliver has been with the district for 11 years, which includes time spent as high school and Madison principal, as well as teaching social studies.

Brady said a district hiring committee reviewed nine candidates, including Oliver.

“There aren’t many out there with the experience and perspectives of all three levels of education and Alan brings that to the table … he brings that wider perspective,” Brady said. “There really is a family atmosphere [at Leary] brought on by the teaming concept, the teachers and students are on teams, they really have a great attitude supporting and nurturing our students. Alan understands that and he will fit in with the staff there. He’s somewhat of a kid at heart and that’s a helpful attitude to have when nurturing junior high students.”

Brady said Oliver will spend time at both Madison and Leary leading up to Sept. 1.

“Officially, he would start Sept. 1 but he will be in the building starting the second week in August and will be transitioning between Madison and the junior high at that time,” Brady said. “He’s very eager to get started so he can prepare, he recognizes he still has responsibilities to Madison so they can start the school year.”
