MASSENA -- The school community is mourning the death of a student.
Matthew Dumas, 17, of Churchill Street committed suicide, according to Superintendent of Schools William Flynn.
School today was delayed two hours. Faculty and staff were called to an assembly this morning to discuss the death and how to respond to it.
"We're certainly saddened by the loss of Matthew. He was a good student and a good friend for the other students and faculty. He will be missed by his fellow saxophone players and the rest of the MCS band," Flynn said.
Although class will be held as usual, Flynn said the shock of Dumas' sudden death is evident.
"As one might expect, everyone is in a somber kind of reflective mood. We've had support here from Hospice and Palliative Care, we've had some guidance from them," Flynn said.
He said guidance counselors from around the district have mustered to support the high school community.
"We have had a whole cadre of guidance counselors, elementary counselors are here today, junior high counselors are here. Of course our counselors here are up and running the whole organized effort," Flynn said.
