MASSENA -- The Boys & Girls Club of Massena are offering a new fitness program aimed at helping kids increase their heart rates, endurance and overall fitness levels.
The program, Club “GO!,” made possible through an Excellus BlueCross BlueShield Community Health Award grant, begins in February and is free to join.
Club “Go” members participate in daily activities including organized intramural sports, 5K training, a walking club, weightlifting, relay races, Jr. Olympics event training, fitness competitions, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, ice skating, sledding, and mountaineering.
Members will have Club “GO!” membership cards that they will fill out to track progress and participation. Awards will be given as students achieve milestones in participation.
Weekly clubs will meet throughout the summer motivating youth to remain active during the break, and participants who have improved the most will go on a field trip to Sky Zone, an indoor trampoline facility in Ottawa, Ontario.
Club “GO!” participants will train throughout the year in preparation for The North Country Junior Olympics, to be hosted by the Boys & Girls Club of Massena at the Massena Central High School track Aug. 12. Youth from all over the area will be invited to compete in track and field events and receive ribbons in an Olympic-style award ceremony.
In addition to the upcoming opening of its new Clubhouse, the Boys & Girls Club of Massena has been delivering after-school programming at Jefferson Elementary and J.W Leary Middle schools. Each year, the Boys & Girls Club has added a new program component to benefit community kids: academic improvement, iKnow Tech (a STEM learning initiative) and a workforce development initiative. Club “Go” is the latest program to get rolled out as a new measure to get kids moving and active.
Kids can sign up for Club “Go” during Boys & Girls Club of Massena regular weekly programming. For more information, call 315-250-7806, email director@bgcmassena.org, find them on Facebook The Boys & Girls Club of Massena, or visit www.bgcmassena.org.
