Massena Board of Education approves coaches, resignations and new hires

MASSENA -- The Board of Education on Thursday made several new hires, appointed fall sports coaches, okayed leaves of absence, resignations and a retirement, and approved tenure for one person.

New hires include Nightengale elementary teacher Jaime Aliffi, effective Aug. 30, 2018 to Aug. 29, 2022 at a $39,424 salary; high school foreign language teacher Sarah Hopper, effective Aug. 30, 2018 to Aug. 29, 2021 at a $59,019 salary; Jefferson elementary teaching assistant Rachael Janos, effective Aug. 30, 2018 to Aug. 29, 2022 at a $32,321 salary, pending certification; motor equipment mechanic Jacob Roome, effective Aug. 20, $52,889 pro-rated salary; and Nightengale cleaner Denise White, effective July 23, $31,321 pro-rated salary.

The board made annual appointments including Community Schools site coordinator Kristin Collarusso-Martin, effective July 1 at a $57,000 salary; district clerk Candice Prairie, effective July 1 at a $67,000 salary; human resources assistant Tracey Superneault, effective July 1, $47,500 salary; and district treasurer Mallory Olson effective July 1 at a $43,260 salary.

Fall sports coaches appointed include junior varsity football coach Ed Letham, $4,617 salary; JV assistant football coach Adrian Taraska, $2,968 salary; varsity football assistant coach Taylor Zappia, $3,388 salary; modified football coach Thomas Oldenburgh, $2,968 salary; modified football assistant coach Sam Zappia, $1,933 salary; varsity boys soccer coach Jeffrey Slack, $4,617 salary; JV boys soccer coach Matt McKinley, $4,167 salary; modified boys soccer coach Zachary Marcellus, $2,743 salary; varsity girls soccer coach Ryan Hayes, $5,199; JV girls soccer coach Michele Trimboli, $4,617; modified girls soccer coach Bill Todd, $3,388; varsity swimming coach Emily Aumand, $4,390; modified swimming coach Emily Watkins, $2,968; cheering coach Sandra Brault, $4,390; varsity volleyball coach Margaret Farrell, $4,390; and modified volleyball coach Anthony Diagostino, $2,743.

The board approved several fall sports volunteers, including Barbara Sanford (swimming), TommieJo Villnave (cheering), and for football Joel Diagostino, Bob Todd, Sean Faucher, Joe Binion, Dave Peets, Marc Plante and John Witkop.

The board will vote on appointing Nick Zappia as head varsity football coach at their August meeting. Superintendent Pat Brady said Zappia was inadvertently left off of the July personnel actions list. He was last year's head coach and is interested in returning this year, Brady said.

The board approved substitutes including Johanna Minehan, long-term high school teacher sub, Aug. 30 to Dec. 14 at $90 to $120 per day or $100 to $150 per day; and teaching assistant and teacher subs Cathy Ashlaw and Sandra Gleason, both effective Aug. 30 at $100 per day.

The board okayed a medical leave of absence for food service manager Roberta Donahue from Aug. 30 to Oct. 31.

The board accepted resignations from high school science teacher Raymond Taylor, Madison elementary music teacher Nichelle Burnett and Madison elementary teacher Meghan Watson, all effective Aug. 30.

The board approved retirement for food service manager Roberta Donahue, effective Nov. 1.

And the board granted final tenure to high school math teacher Christine Kassian, effective Oct. 26.
