MASSENA -- The village board on Tuesday voted unanimously to adopt a Complete Streets policy.

It enacts uniform design standards for things like roads, sidewalks and crosswalks for future repairs or projects.

The idea is to make the village “more accessible, pedestrian- and bicycle-friendly and so on,” Mayor Tim Currier said.

Deputy Mayor Matt Lebire said they looked at several similar laws and took their time writing it to fit local needs.

“We wanted to make sure this policy was right for our community,” he said. “It keeps specifications and control with the village and DPW … it’s definitely a good step forward.

“Accessibility is key.”

“You won't see any immediate changes. You’ll see changes, let’s say if (DPW Superintendent) Hassan Fayad is designing a new street. Let’s say we’re putting in sidewalks … or fixing ones that are already there. You won’t see immediate changes, but as we go forward these guidelines will be visited and taken into consideration,” Currier said in December.

A public hearing prior to the vote drew no comments.
