CANTON -- Peter M. Smith Jr., 79, from Norfolk came to the United Helpers Maplewood campus after two trees fell on him.
His ailments consisted of a crushed foot, and a fractured ankle, hip, and spine. He needed inpatient rehabilitation services to regain his strength and mobility.
Physical therapists help patients and individuals by providing services that maintain and restore function, improve mobility, relieve pain, and prevent or limit permanent physical disabilities.
Depending on the severity of your condition, your doctor will recommend the type of rehabilitation that makes sense for you, along a spectrum from less intensive (outpatient rehab) to more intensive care (inpatient rehab), or a sequence of both.
After 14 weeks of inpatient physical therapy, Smith was able to return home. After arriving home, Smith had some difficulty with balance and trunk mobility. He came back to Maplewood for outpatient rehabilitation two to three days a week for a total of nine weeks.
“Mr. Smith worked very hard’“ said Rebecca Collins, physical therapist at Maplewood. “He was limited in almost everything he did on a daily basis and progressed to being
able to return to his previous lifestyle with few limitations.”
Whether it’s deconditioning, total joints, strains, balance problems, or other aliments, the United Helpers therapy team can assist patients of all ages and needs.
“I feel great,” said Smith. “The Maplewood staff helped me a lot. I can now bend over to tie my own shoes.”
