MACOMB – A 66-year-old man whose four-wheeler had fallen through the ice of Black Lake was rescued Sunday morning by Morristown and Brier Hill volunteer first responders.
Morristown volunteers were called out just before 8 a.m. to the eastern shore of Black Lake near Pope Mills. They called for help from the Brier Hill Fire Department and their ice rescue equipment.
Members of both departments donned ice rescue suits and made their way to the man. They attached him to the ice rescue sled, pulled him to safety, and put him aboard the waiting Morristown Ambulance.
The man was taken to Claxton-Hepburn hospital where he was treated for hypothermia, according to Morristown Fire Chief Kevin Crosby.
Crosby is asking people to take care on ice that has been subject to warm temperatures.
“We are asking that people use some common sense out there,” he said. “It has been so warm lately the ice is extremely thin and there is a lot of open water out there.”
Crosby said this is not their first ice rescue this year.
“There have been three incidents already on Black Lake this year. Thankfully no one has died but in all three incidents there was certainly a high probability that any of the victims could have easily perished. Please be safe out there,” he said.
