POTSDAM – The two generators in Potsdam’s West Dam hydroelectric station are producing power, though not without some difficulty.
Meanwhile the two generators in the East Dam station could be repaired and reinstalled by June, according to a report from Greg Thompson, village administrator.
Thompson told the Board of Trustees Monday that the West Dam generators have been cutting out intermittently due to “frazzle” and anchor ice obstructing the water flow. That is causing the generators to “trip out” temporarily.
Thompson said he has been told that as soon as the ice covers the area upstream from the intakes, that problem will abate.
Meanwhile, Thompson reports, Maine Industrial Repair Services in Augusta, Maine plans to submit a bid to rebuild the gearboxes from the East Dam turbines, which remain inoperable to this point.
Thompson said a representative of Maine Industrial plans to come to Potsdam in January and inspect the job.
“He was confident he could get them to their shop by February and repaired and installed by June,” Thompson said.
Maine Industrial has already completed the job of realigning the shafts in the West Dam turbines.
