MADRID -- A 33-year-old man is jailed on multiple charges after police said he assaulted a woman, took her vehicle without permission, crashed it and then fled the accident scene, St. Lawrence County Sheriff's deputies said.
He allegedly then borrowed a second, uninvolved person's vehicle without permission and refused to return it, garnering himself another charge, according to deputies.
Michael J. Mitchell of 1801 State Hwy. 310 is charged with third-degree assault, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, second-degree aggravated unlicensed operation, leaving the scene of a property damage accident, second-degree criminal contempt and misapplication of property, deputies said.
Deputies said Mitchell allegedly assaulted the woman during a domestic dispute. A news release from deputies was not clear as to exactly when Mitchell took the second person's vehicle, but did say the person was not involved in either the domestic incident or the crash.
Mitchell was arraigned in Potsdam Town Court and sent to the St. Lawrence County Correctional Facility, Canton in lieu of $2,500 bail.
