CANTON – District 8 St. Lawrence County Legislator Kevin Acres R-Madrid was named chairman of the board Monday at the organizational board meeting.
District 3 legislator Joseph Lightfoot, R-Oswegatchie, was named as vice chairman.
The chairman position was previously held by District 12 legislator John Burke, R-Norfolk, who announced recently that he would not seek the chairman position for a second term.
Acres and Lightfoot were both appointed in 9-6 vote. The Republicans hold a 10-5 majority on the legislature.
Democrats nominated District 13 legislator Tony Arquiett, D-Helena, for both chair and vice chair positions.
Arquiett received votes from all Democrats on the legislature. He also received support from Burke, who was the only Republican to vote across party lines. Burke supported Arquiett in votes for both the chairman and vice chairman position.
Acres is a Madrid dairy farmer who has served on the legislator since 2011. He previously served on the Madrid-Waddington School Board.
