Low water in the St. Lawrence Seaway is causing concern for ships near Galop Island, off of Lisbon in the St. Lawrence River.
The St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation has lowered the speed limit for ships between Galop Island and the Lisbon shore due to the low water level and appearance of shoals there.
"Vessels drafting 78.0dm (25.5 ft.) or greater are limited to 7 knots upbound and 12 knots downbound,” Seaway officials warn.
“For vessels with a draft of less than 78.0 dm, the speed limit of 13 knots remains in effect. Vessel speed in this area will be monitored closely,” the notice says.
