Louisville Lightning take state U16 hockey championship

The Louisville Lightning claimed the New York State U16 championship held in Amherst on March 13 to 15.

The Lightning went 3-0 in their Division.

The beat Bedford (east zone third seed) 10-1, Jamestown (west second seed) 6-1 and White Plains (top east seed) 4-2.

Their record in their division earned them the first place seed for the semi-final game on Sunday versus Batavia who were the top seed in the tournament.

The teams swapped goals throughout the opening period, going into the middle stanza at a 2-2 tie. The Lightning pulled away in the second period, scoring three more times unanswered. Batavia made a push in the third period scoring at the 4:07 mark to tighten the game up to a 5-3 contest. Louisville fashioned two more goals at 3:21 and 2:02, finishing the tilt with a 7-3 win.

The championship game featured a rematch of the Lightning versus the White Plains Plainsman from Division 1.

The game remained scoreless throughout the first period with each team trading scoring chances throughout. Louisville opened up the scoring at the 4:25 mark of the first period and again at 1:15 to pull out to a 2-0 lead. The Plainsman tightened the contest up, scoring at the 14:22 mark to make the game 2-1. Louisville continued their attack by breaking a hard fore checking Plainsville squad and gaining momentum through the neutral zone. Louisville scored at 12:49 mark to make the contest 3-1 at the close of the second stanza. The third frame saw the Lightning scoring respectively at 9:23 and with 24 seconds on the clock. The game finished with Louisville crowned as the New York State U16 Champions by a final score of 5-1.
