MASSENA -- Twenty years ago this month Massena lost one of its most famous former citizens, according to local documenter John Michaud.

Hal J. Smith, known best for his role of Otis Campbell on The Andy Griffith Show, passed away at his Santa Monica home at age 77.

Michaud says Smith was a 1936 graduate of Massena High School who traveled to Hollywood in 1946 and became a successful character actor in many popular television shows and movies.

Featured in the video below is Smith at WIBX Radio in Utica, New York. “It features him on The I Married Joan Show, Gun Smoke, the Donald O'Connor Special, The Andy Griffith Show, Pat Paulsen's Half A Comedy Hour, The Addams Family, Green Acres, Hogan's Heros, The Brady Bunch, The Redd Foxx Comedy Hour, and Highway To Heavan,” Michaud said.
