POTSDAM -- Sean Hoyden, a railroad enthusiast and former Norwood resident, captured a photo recently of a train and a depot he has wanted to get for years.

Hoyden says he spent several hours the night of Monday, Sept. 17 near the tracks in Potsdam “waiting on this Northbound intermodal train heading for Massena and points north.

“This is a shot I'd been wanting to take for a few years, but in daylight it is really hard to make the old NYC [New York Central Railroad] station jump out, IF you can get the sun to cooperate when the train happens to be there.”

But at night, he said, with adequate lighting, he captured the CSX locomotive and the former Potsdam station, now the restaurant Mama Lucia, in one shot.

“The old NYC Freight Depot/Station in Potsdam, New York sits about 200 feet from the tracks now. The railroad was realigned, I think, back in the 80s to make room for the US Route 11 bypass which now passes between the ‘mainline’ and the station.

“This train passed through around 1 a.m., and my old high school and Navy buddy Earl Cook is the engineer.”

The train is CSX Q152, Hoyden said, which runs between Syracuse and Beauharnois, Quebec with intermodal containers.
