HAMMOND -- Spay/Neuter/Now, Ltd. (SNN) has been awarded a $10,000 New York State Animal Population Control Program grant by the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

The funds are in support of low-cost spaying/neutering programs cats and dogs owned by low-income people in northern New York. The APCP grant originates with the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets and is administrated by the ASPCA.

The grant will support Spay/Neuter/Now’s operational expenses for a low-cost clinic for cats and a voucher program for dogs and cats.

“Grant funds are anticipated to result in over 300 cat and dog sterilization surgeries through Spay/Neuter/Now programs over the upcoming winter months,” said veterinarian and Spay/Neuter/Now General Manager Kevin T. Mace. “Animal sterilization is the most effective means to reducing the pet overpopulation crisis and we are immeasurably thankful to the ASPCA for supporting spaying and neutering. Our continued ability to provide low-cost sterilization surgeries in the North Country is dependent upon donations, fundraising and grants such as this.”

“Spay/neuter programs are a community’s best long-term investment for saving lives of animals at risk of homelessness due to overpopulation, and the ASPCA is happy to provide SNN with the funds to continue their work.” said Michael Barrett, vice president of grants management for the ASPCA. Information for organizations or municipalities to apply for an APCP project grant can be found at www.aspcapro.org.

The Spay/Neuter/Now mobile clinic and voucher programs cover primarily St. Lawrence, Jefferson and Lewis counties. In 2012 Spay/Neuter/Now performed or aided in over 1,300 sterilization surgeries, pushing the organization past 13,000 sterilizations since 1994.
