Local landlord thinks Massena rental registry is going too far and a 'personal affront'

MASSENA — A local landlord on Tuesday told the village board that he thinks their proposed rental registry is going too far and is “a personal affront.”

The board is in the process of drawing up a running list of landlords in the village. Last month, Deputy Mayor Matt Lebire said there would be no cost to get on the list and it would be just aimed at keeping track of who owns what properties.

DuBray said he understands the village has problems with some rental properties, but he takes issue with “the concept of being told what to do, asking me personal questions about what’s going on at my property.”

“I take it as a personal affront. I know it’s not intended personally. Please look at it again,” he told the trustees.

Mayor Tim Currier said the proposal is still in draft form and will be subject to a public hearing and board vote before becoming law.

“We’re still in the drafting phase. A copy has been sent to the trustees. We’re looking for feedback,” Currier told DuBray. “That would require a local law change, which requires a public hearing … We’re going to annouce we have the local law change."

“We’re a long way away from that.”

In a separate discussion, DuBray also complimented the DPW for recent roadwork in the village.

“You need to be applauded,” he said.

He also praised the DPW for what he described as professionalism when assisting him with a water issue on one of his properties.

“They were very professional, thank you very much for whoever’s got that going on and had to train those young men,” he said.
