POTSDAM – Bookshelves of gently used books to be given away in waiting rooms, reception areas, laundromats, and more are sought by Literacy of Northern NY/St. Lawrence County to increase literacy awareness.

LNNY invites any and all North Country businesses to participate in the LNNY SHELFIES! Program.

Twenty-five locations have already provided SHELFIES! for the “soft launch” over the last few months. Physicians, chiropractors, insurance offices and more have already expressed pleasure at being able to provide the service.

Participating North Country businesses are in:

• Norfolk, Sabad's Restaurant

• Canton, Renewal House, Canton Methodist Church, Manor Apartments

• Brasher Falls, Riverview Bar/Restaurant

• Potsdam, MacFadden, Dier, Leonard Insurance; Neighborhood Church and Community Center; Monro Muffler; North Country Collision; Penske

• Gouverneur, Dashnaw's Pizza/Laundromat, Dr. Timothy Moon, Fidelis Care

• Ogdensburg, The Sherman Inn, The Boys and Girls Club, Washboard Laundry & Dry Cleaning

• Massena, Dr. Elizabeth LoGalbo; Massena Independent Living Center

• Norwood, The Nest Egg Bed and Breakfast

• and coin operated laundries in Potsdam, Norfolk, Massena, and Gouverneur.

LNNY also helps replenish the local Little Libraries in Canton (on Main Street, in the park, at the Price Chopper, and Linda's Hair Shop) as well as on the SUNY Potsdam campus.

LNNY offers special thanks to Friends of the Potsdam Library, Ogdensburg Library, and private individuals for donations of books.

Literacy of Northern New York/St. Lawrence County office is on the third-floor balcony of the Potsdam Library, 2 Park Street.

The agency offers professional training for volunteers to work one-to-one with adults who need help with reading, writing, math, or English as a second language. They also work closely with human service agencies to address any literacy needs their clients may have.
