POTSDAM -- Literacy of Northern NY is offering a new, online version of its tutor training course for volunteers.
The online training provides an alternative to prospective tutors who cannot attend multiple in-house training sessions.
There is a one-hour in-person orientation meeting, online training for BLL (Basic Literacy) and ELL (English Language Learner), and a final, three-hour, in-person post-training session.
Volunteers can take BLL, ELL or both training courses.
Literacy of Northern NY matches adults who want to become better readers or are learning English for the first time, with someone who can give them some one-on-one help.
First, tutors go through a training course to help them learn basic teaching techniques and are then matched with a student. Tutors and students meet once or twice a week for about an hour.
