LISBON -- Lisbon students can sign up for a summer program that provides free swimming lessons, free lunches, and other outdoor activities, thanks to grant funding from The People’s Project, and collaboration between the Lisbon Central School District non-instructional union (LTA) and the town of Lisbon.
The People's Project is a national organization that is designed to assist unions in helping the communities that they are part of. The grant funding aids collaboration between unions and community groups to foster relationships and enrich the communities.
According to the summer program coordinator Julie Rexford, “we are collaborating very well with Mike O’Neil from Lisbon beach and the Jim Armstrong with the town of Lisbon. After the first day on July 10th, it was clear that the program is going to really be a success.”
The grant provides for the transportation, lunches, and equipment for swimming and other outdoor activities. Volunteers from the LTA will serve as supervisors throughout the summer.
The beach program currently has capacity for 40 students in grades 3-8, and will run through Aug. 4th, Monday through Friday from 12 p.m. - 3:45 p.m. A bus will leave Lisbon Central School’s back parking lot (beside the cafeteria entry) at 11:55 a.m. each day. Students must be picked up from the beach no later than 3:45 p.m.
There are still several slots available and applications can be picked up in the elementary office.
