Light snow expected today and tonight in St. Lawrence County; maybe freezing rain later in the week

The National Weather Service is warning of light snow developing this afternoon along the Adirondacks with localized accumulations of 2-4" likely above 1,000 feet through tonight.

In St. Lawrence County, the forecast is for snow showers with gusty winds today and tonight with highs today around 35 and overnight lows in the mid teens.

Tuesday skies will clear somewhat with high only in the 20s and clear skies Tuesday night with lows around 10.

Temperatures will rise Wednesday into the 30s and Thursday into the 40s, NWS says.

The weather service is also sending out advance notice of a strong storm system moving up the east coast which they say will bring mixed precipitation to the region Thursday night into Friday morning possibly with some freezing rain, which could lead to hazardous travel conditions.

The NWS forecast for the St. Lawrence Valley and northwestern Adirondacks:

• Today: A 50 percent chance of snow showers. Cloudy, with a high near 36. Northwest wind 8 to 13 mph, with gusts as high as 23 mph. Total daytime snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible.

• Tonight: Snow likely before 1am, then a chance of snow showers between 1am and 3am. Cloudy, with a low around 15. Northwest wind 11 to 14 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible.

• Tuesday: Partly sunny, with a high near 21. Northwest wind 8 to 10 mph, with gusts as high as 21 mph.

• Tuesday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 11. West wind 5 to 8 mph becoming light and variable in the evening.

• Wednesday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 34. Light south wind becoming southwest 5 to 9 mph in the morning.

• Wednesday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 27. South wind 3 to 6 mph.

• Thursday: Mostly cloudy, with a high near 43. Southeast wind 3 to 6 mph.

• Thursday Night: Rain likely. Cloudy, with a low around 35. East wind 5 to 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%.

• Friday: Rain. High near 46. East wind 10 to 14 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%.

• Friday Night: Showers likely. Cloudy, with a low around 37. East wind 10 to 14 mph becoming south after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 70%.

• Saturday: Showers likely. Cloudy, with a high near 40. West wind 8 to 13 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%.

• Saturday Night: A chance of rain and snow showers. Cloudy, with a low around 24. West wind around 13 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%.

• Sunday: A 30 percent chance of snow showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 30. West wind 11 to 13 mph.
