Add five more libraries in St. Lawrence County to the list of those receiving grants from the state.

Hammond Free Library, Hepburn Library of Hermon, Hepburn Library of Lisbon, Hepburn Library of Madrid, Morristown Public Library, and Richville Free Library will all be receiving grants of $3,000 from the state, according to an announcement from Sen. Patty Ritchie (R-Heuvelton), whose district includes those libraries.

That is on top of the construction grants to Canton Free Library, Ogdensburg Public Library, Potsdam Public Library and Madrid's Hepburn Library, most of which were announced Tuesday by Assemblywoman Addie Russell (D-Theresa).

The New York State Library Construction Grants amounted to $24,732 for Ogdensburg's library, $18,437 for Potsdam, $5,923 for Canton, and $67,154 for Madrid. The libraries each applied to the state for the construction funds.

Speaking of the smaller grants, Executive Director of the Northern New York Library Network John Hammond said, “These grants offer a great opportunity for small libraries to enhance their services to their users. Some libraries may use these funds for things like old-fashioned books, and others may purchase things like e-books. In either case, we appreciate Senator Ritchie's help in sustaining and improving library services here in the region.”

Ritchie represents the state’s 48th Senate District, covering Ogdensburg and northwestern townships in St. Lawrence County, along with Jefferson and Oswego counties.

Assemblywoman Russell represents the River District of St. Lawrence County, including Ogdensburg. She supported the funding in the 2012 state budget.

Announcements of the grants to libraries in St. Lawrence County might continue to dribble in as state legislators exercise their prerogative to make the announcements about libraries in their districts.

With seven Senate and Assembly members representing the county, there might be more announcements to come.
