MASSENA -- Anyone enjoying the St. Lawrence River June 8-9 can expect increased presence from U.S. Law Enforcement.

Authorities from Canadian and U.S. law enforcement will be conducting a two-day high-visibility patrol effort along the shared border between Northern New York, Eastern Ontario, and Western Quebec.

The U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Border Patrol, NY Air National Guard, NYS Park Police, NYS Police, St. Regis Mohawk Tribal Police, U.S. Custom and Border Protection’s Office of Field Operations and variety of Canadian agencies will participate in the effort.

United States law enforcement will increase inbound and outbound inspections at the ports of entry and increase marine patrols in the St. Lawrence River.

While Canadian their counterparts will have uniformed officers visiting and meeting with residents along the shoreline of the St. Lawrence River.

A release from the Department of Homeland Security says the “goal of this operation is to provide insight to residents on the importance of border security, to seek their input and to address any citizen concerns.”

Details on what river-goers should expect are unclear, as the Department of Homeland Security did not respond immediately to requests for comment. However, U.S. Coast Guard and Border Agents may board and inspect vessels without cause.

“Collaborative efforts like this one between U.S. and Canadian law enforcement agencies bring together the shared resources and expertise from our two countries with the singular goal of promoting border integrity," James Spero, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) special agent in charge for Buffalo, which covers the entire region, said in a prepared statement.

"When law enforcement partners on both sides of the border stand shoulder to shoulder to focus on specific missions, it enhances the overall safety and security in the communities in which we work and live.”

The following agencies will participate in the effort: HSI, Cornwall RCMP Detachment, RCMP Valleyfield and Kingston Detachments, “O” Division’s Marine Security Enforcement Team (MSET), Ontario Provincial Police, Canada Border Services Agency, Cornwall Community Police Services, Akwesasne Mohawk Police Service, Ontario Ministry of Finance, Sûreté du Québec, New York State Police, St. Regis Mohawk Tribal Police, United States Coast Guard, United States Border Patrol, New York State Air National Guard, New York State Park Police, and U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s Office of Field Operations.
