Conservation fund members, Rep. Stefanik discuss parks in Cranberry Lake, Louisville, Massena, Potsdam, other towns

A dozen St. Lawrence County parks were part of Land Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) progress discussions earlier this month at a roundtable hosted by North Country Republican Congresswoman Elise Stefanik in Plattsburgh.

For 50 years the Land Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) has supported wilderness, historical and Community Park projects across the North Country.

The LWCF supports Cranberry Lake State Park, Louisville Town Park, Barnhart Island Marina, Sandstoner Park in Potsdam, Jacques Cartier State Park, Louisville Community Park, Robert Moses State Park, Bend-In-The-River Park in Canton, Greenbelt Par in Ogdensburg, St. Lawrence State Park, Higley Flow State Park in South Colton and Piercefield Beach.

“It is important to the Adirondacks,” Congresswoman Stefanik told the Post Star in July of 2015. “The issue came across my desk when I was talking to some of my Adirondack activists, in Essex County in particular.”

Congresswoman Stefanik has advocated for this program since arriving in Congress, cosponsoring legislation last summer that would make the program permanent.

Stefanik urged the Appropriations Committee to make more investment in the LWCF through the annual appropriations process. She also partnered with Congressman Chris Gibson to urge then Speaker John Boehner to call for a permanent reauthorization of the LWCF.

This past December in the year-end government funding package, Stefanik voted for a three year authorization of this program, noting that, “while this extension is good news, I support making it a permanent resource so that we can end year-to-year uncertainty about its future.”
