Hammond and Ogdensburg youngsters were among the winners of the local Watertown Public Broadcasting 2013 PBS “Kids Go! Writer’s Contest.”

Kindergartener Connor Grenier of Ogdensburg took third place in his age group with his “The Very Lonely Tooth.”

Hammond kids swept the third grade age group, with Cooper Bennett capturing first place for his “Hockey Town.” Second place went to Abigail Bresett’s “A Barbie Camping Trip” and “The King Race” by Kennon Gardner won third place.

The annual contest asks children to use their imaginations to create original storybooks.

Winners at the local level will progress to the national competition.

“WPBS is proud of all the winners of this year’s contest. It is obvious they put a lot of time and effort into creating their stories”, said Teri-Gene Conlin, outreach manager at WPBS-DT. “It is wonderful to celebrate their accomplishments and encourage them to continue writing,” said Conlin.

Winners were selected from over 90 local entrants, with stories judged on originality, creative expression, storytelling and integration of text and illustration. Emily Owen, youth services consultant at North Country Library System; Ashley Pickett, children’s librarian at Roswell P. Flower Memorial Library; and Mary Sawyer, circulation director at the Watertown Daily Times served as judges this year.

Winners and their families enjoyed a slice of cake donated by the Watertown Walmart at the recent awards ceremony.

Every child who entered the contest received a Certificate of Achievement and a certificate for a free issue of Highlights magazine. Winning authors also received a tote bag filled with items and books from WPBS-DT.

Winners of the national contest will be chosen in June.
