Jobless rate in St. Lawrence County continues modest downward trend

Unemployment in St. Lawrence County continues a general downward trend, according to the latest figures from the state Department of Labor released today.

In St. Lawrence County, the official jobless rate dropped from 8.3 percent in November to 8.1 percent in December. In December 2012, the rate was 10.1 percent, two points higher than last month.

The DOL counts the number of people on unemployment insurance in St. Lawrence County at 3,800 in December, down from 3,900 in November. But the number employed also fell, from 43,600 in November to 43,300 in December.

In Jefferson County, to our west, the rate ticked up a tenth of a percent from November to December, 9.0 to 9.1 percent.

In December 2012, Jefferson County’s jobless rate was nearly two points higher, at 10.8 percent.

To our east, in Franklin County, the rate stood at 8.1 percent in November, and dropped to 8.0 percent in December.

In 2012, their rate was 10.1 percent for December.

The figures reported today for December are considered preliminary and are not yet adjusted to compensate for normal seasonal variations by the DOL.
