WEST STOCKHOLM -- State police say an investigation is pending into a rollover crash that left an octogenarian with critical injuries.

On Thursday, troopers say they responded to a crash on U.S. Highway 11 between the McGovern and Old Close roads.

Troopers say a 2018 Jeep Compass, driven by 86-year-old Marie M. Baxter of Stockholm was traveling east when her vehicle drifted into the oncoming lane of traffic and onto the north shoulder of the roadway.

Baxter’s vehicle continued on the north shoulder for approximately 200 yards, collided with two mailboxes, before overturning several times down a steep embankment. The vehicle came to rest turned over on it’s passenger side, troopers said.

Baxter was transported by Potsdam Rescue to Canton-Potsdam Hospital, where she was treated for a broken sternum, broken ribs, and a lacerated liver and kidney. She was air lifted by Life Net to Upstate Medical Center, Syracuse, for further treatment where she is currently still listed as critical but stable condition, troopers said.

Police say their investigation is pending, but no charges have yet been issued.
